This filter does not fit cow cabinets that have an external water filter. Please look here for external filters. 

According to the appliance manufacturer's recommendation, you should always replace the water filter when:

the refrigerator has not been used for a long time
if the water smells or becomes cloudy
or, to be on the safe side, every 6 months at the latest
